Conservation of Metacomet Ridge

Conservation of Metacomet Ridge

Even though it took centuries before the Metacomet Ridge area began to be regarded as a piece of prime real estate, it is still a major concern that the major influx of humanity into the places close to this natural marvel would cause great risk to the Ridge itself. Developers have, of course, discovered that many people would appreciate having the kind of view that Metacomet Ridge offers on a regular basis. But this means that much of what makes Metacomet Ridge the great geographical wonder that it is would be compromised ever so much. Which is why the urban development of Metacomet Ridge has become one of the most greatly-debated issues regarding this place.

One of the major concerns is the fact that Metacomet Ridge is being quarried because there is an increasing need for stone (for construction purposes) in the area. This affects not only the kind of experience that could be derived out of simply walking along one of the trails of Metacomet Ridge, but also the ecosystem that the Ridge supports. The other concern is the apparent boom in the interest in outdoor sports among Americans (some time close to the turn of the century), making Metacomet Ridge one of the most ideal places to visit. The influx of people, if not regulated properly, may further push for the decline of the wilderness that makes Metacomet Ridge so charming.

At the moment, conservation of the Metacomet Ridge is achieved through legislative action, public and private land purchasing, and conservation easements.
